How To Hire A Wedding Photographer – 4 Steps To Finding The Right Professional To Capture Your Day

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Many brides are comfortable with such priorities as reception site or catering selection, but may not be as familiar with the process of hiring the right wedding photographer. Wedding photography is one of the most important aspects of your day, so you’ll need to choose wisely to get the wedding pictures you desire. This guide will walk you through it.

1) Consider Chemistry
Brides often underestimate the importance of the photographer?s personality, yet this person will end up being a very personal guest at your most important event. Evaluate carefully whether you feel comfortable with this person. Some of the most beautiful moments happen behind the scenes, while the bride is dressing, while the couple steals a kiss, and you should feel comfortable inviting the photographer to capture these moments. First find a wedding photographer you like as a person, then evaluate the artistic criteria.

2) Review the Portfolio
Seasoned wedding photographers have what is called a “book,” which is a portfolio of their best work. Evaluating a photographer?s portfolio depends on your own stylistic and artistic preferences. His or her work should match your tastes and style. Make sure the images speak to you and reflect your personal visions for your wedding day. Look for crisp images, thoughtful composition and good lighting. Also ask to see the shots from a complete wedding; that way you can see it all – not just the highlights – and you will have a better feel for his or her ability to capture your day.

3) Ask the Right Questions
During the interview, make sure you have answered these important questions:

Who will be taking the pictures?

Make sure that the photographer whose portfolio you review will be the actual person who takes the pictures at your wedding.

What is the photographer?s primary style?
Many photographers claim to shoot both classic and photojournalistic photography, but in reality, most are better at one or the other. Make sure you know his or her strengths and background to ensure you get the wedding photos you want.

Do you shoot mostly in color, black and white, or both?
Your photographer should have experience with both and be able to customize to meet your needs.

How many rolls do you shoot?
Obviously more rolls of film means more wedding photos to choose from, but remember that more rolls usually cost more money.

Are you familiar with the location?
Your photographer should be familiar with the ceremony and reception site so that he or she can quickly and efficiently capture the best shots.

What are your references?
Call each reference and ask whether or not the person was satisfied with the overall experience and received the desired photos.

4) Get Everything in Writing
To avoid any confusion, all of the details that you have painstakingly discussed should be in writing. Read the contract carefully, especially the fine print.

Product Description
As a wedding photographer, you spend a lot of your time focusing on the business side of it. You want to provide your clients with the most beautiful pictures and you want to turn a profit for yourself. Beyond that, though, you should think about some other things. For example, as a photographer, you should know why someone should hire you over having his or her Uncle Vinny take charge of the photographs themselves. Do you know why hiring a professional wedding photographer is best?

As you look for a few wedding photography tips, remember this one, which may be the most important of them all. Ensure that each of your brides, grooms and their families create what is called a shot list. You do not read minds, so you do need to know what they are expecting from you. No matter if this list is large or small, it will play an integral part in the success of your photo shoot. However, it can be difficult to approach a couple about such a list. Before you take the plunge, consider these helpful tips.

As you prepare for your first wedding shoot, be sure you have done everything to be ready for this event. There are plenty of things for you to do, including having a lot of fun. Although you may be very prepared for this event, and have done all of your homework, there may be a few things that you forgot about. It is actually common for first time wedding photographers to make a few mistakes along the way.

Capture The Memories Of Your Wedding With Creative Wedding Photography

Monday, March 29th, 2010

When it comes to your wedding, no detail goes unnoticed; everything from the dress to the food to the flowers comes under careful scrutinizing as you work to create the wedding of your dreams. And when the day has passed and you are left with your memories of it, nothing helps to bring you back to that special day like the photographs bound into a keepsake album and available at any moment to whisk you back to the day you said “I do.” Modern brides and grooms, however, often will not settle for the traditional wedding photography that graced the weddings of yesteryear. Instead, today’s savvy couples expect creative wedding photography to capture their day.

Creative wedding photography really amounts to taking the traditional and adding your own special twist. Photographers have long had great reserves of talent and creativity to draw upon; but traditional wedding photography was stifled by formally posed pictures and cookie cutter expectations. However, today’s photographers – given the freedom by the couples that hire them – are able to infuse their own creative style into all the wedding shots they capture. Gone are the days of stiffly held poses and unflattering angles. Today’s creative wedding photography captures the unique personality of each wedding and the joy with which couples and their loved ones celebrate this special day.

Ultimately creative wedding photography is all about the couples deciding what works for their particular situation. You may wish to have your wedding captured with all candid shots or a combination of candid and formally posed; you may wish to have some black-and-white pictures taken; or perhaps you’ve seen the wedding albums of someone else who has gotten married and aspire to mirror that same photography. No matter what you are looking for in order to capture and tell the story of your wedding, a photographer is out there who will get the job done.

Word-of-mouth is the most efficient way to find a professional skilled in creative wedding photography. Ask around and talk to friends whose weddings you admired. The Internet has also opened up a whole new world for photographers and the consumers who are seeking their services. You can literally walk through a gallery of photographs in each photographer’s site to decide if their style fits your needs. Finally, meet in person with someone you are looking to hire. Your photographer is going to be right alongside you the entire day of your wedding; you want to be with someone you like and with whom you are comfortable.

Creative wedding photography really comes down to each couple deciding what they want to tell their own story. These will be the photographs you share with your children and grandchildren – the photographs that will tell the story of your wedding long after you are gone. Choose your photographer wisely and stay true to your personal idea of creative wedding photography.
