Good Wedding Photography Sites Throughout Philadelphia

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

For wedding photography, Philadelphia is probably the best city in the country. It’s urban, steeped in history and culture, filled with gardens and parks and dubbed the “city of love” for a reason. For five of the city’s best wedding photography locations, keep reading.

Longwood Gardens (longwoodgardens.org)

It’s hard to go wrong at Longwood Gardens, the grounds are massive, but also pristine and positively stunning. With water fountains, flowers and beautiful foliage, the Gardens make for an incredible backdrop setting for your Philadelphia wedding photos.

However, before you arrive at the Longwood gates with your wedding party, photographer and lights in tow, you should know the Gardens do allow photography, but there are policies you must follow. All attendees are required to pay the $16 entrance fee, and no tripods or lights can be used at any time. You may also be required to sign a permission form saying the photos are for personal, not commercial, use.

LOVE Park

What could be more romantic than photos taken under the infamous LOVE statue in Philadelphia’s Love Park? Officially, the park is named JFK Plaza, but is lovingly referred to as LOVE Park thanks to the infamous Robert Indiana LOVE sculpture overlooking the park in Philadelphia’s city center.

It’s free to take photos in LOVE Park, but be prepared to compete with other wedding parties, especially if you’re shooting on a busy June Saturday. To avoid disappointment, set aside some extra photography time in case you run into another wedding.

Bartram’s Garden

Bartram’s Gardens are the country’s oldest public gardens, and the setting is both romantic and idyllic. With its stone courtyard, historical buildings and beautiful garden setting – it’s a great spot for wedding photography. Philadelphia photographers should know the location well.

However, shooting at Bartram’s isn’t cheap or easy. Unless your wedding is already booked at the venue, you may have to reserve around a wedding. Regardless, you can expect to pay between $200 and $250 per hour for photographing at the space.

The Steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art

As the major focus of Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is massive and a true landmark of the city. For those looking for a real taste of Philadelphia in their wedding photos, this could be it.

The steps are massive and high, while the eight pillars are a stunning backdrop. You may recognize the popular photo setting from the Rocky movies as the steps that Rocky Balboa climbed during his training. Keep in mind that wedding parties require a $50 per hour permit from the Fairmount Park Commission to shoot on the location.

Rittenhouse Square

Smack dab in the middle of Center City, Rittenhouse Square is both a convenient and beautiful spot for wedding pictures. Philadelphia residents will instantly recognize the urban park’s green setting and natural beauty. The best part? You don’t need a permit to shoot and you gain the attractiveness of the city at the same time.

Good places to look for wedding gown for beach wedding?

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

I’m planning an informal wedding that will take place on a beach. We’re planning on going barefoot, and doing everything very simple. However, I have no idea what to look for as far as dresses go. Every website I go to seems to have these elaborate gowns. I want something long [not a fan of cocktail length dresses], but I don’t know where to begin…

Good Questions to Ask your Wedding Cake Baker

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Choosing the best vendor to make your wedding cake is important. The right baker or bakery will ensure that you get exactly what you are looking for in a wedding cake. Here are some questions you can ask wedding cake makers that you’re considering for your wedding reception. These questions will help take out some of the guess work:

Ask for a Tasting

Find out if the baker or bakery will allow you a tasting before you order the wedding cake. This common practice is in your best interest and the best interests of the baker. Taste all the different frostings and cake flavors that you’re interested in using for your wedding cake.

Ask to view a Wedding Cake Portfolio

Ask to see pictures of wedding cakes that the baker has previously created. The wedding cake portfolio will inspire you with creative ideas that you can use and help you to decide if you like the baker’s creative style.

Ask about Custom Cakes

Ask if the cake maker can create a cake from a picture, your own design, or from a combination of the two. Find out if any extra fees are charged to create a customized wedding cake. These questions are only relevant if you are looking for the personalized touch of a custom designed wedding cake.

Ask about the Cake Preparation Time Line

Nobody wants a stale cake for their wedding. Ask the baker when they will finish baking and icing your cake. Depending on the baker’s workload, this is done days in advance. Whatever the case may be, your wedding cake shouldn’t be baked more than 10 days before the wedding and the icing on the cake should be done no more than 2 days before the wedding to ensure freshness.

Ask about Delivery and Set-up

Ask the baker about delivery and set-up options and fees. Determine if they deliver and set-up the wedding cake or if they only offer delivery services. Also ask if there are additional charges for setting up the wedding cake. Keep in mind that some caterers dislike the added responsibility of setting up wedding cakes that have not been purchased through them.

Ask about Other Charges

Find out if the bakers are going to charge you a deposit fee for items such as cake tops, pillars, or columns. These will have to be returned to the baker and they may charge you if you do not return the items at the appropriate time and in good condition.

Conclusion

When you finally select the baker that meets your criteria, write everything out on paper and have the baker confirm your order so that there isn’t any room for confusion later on.
