Each photographer has his or her own style of taking pictures. After many years of shooting, you usually can narrow the various techniques and approaches into different style categories. I have narrowed it down to four different typical formats of wedding photography that we cover. We are completely and fully comfortable shooting each one and allow the couple to choose which style best represents their personality and personal flair!
1. Wedding Photojournalism
A wedding photojournalistic style of photography involves the photographer not being involved nearly as much as normal. The story is told though the photographs and emphasis is taken off of the typical posed and planned pictures. With this style of wedding photography, we tend to stand on the sidelines and shoot from the background, becoming as unobtrusive as possible. However, the photos we capture put the viewer right in the mix of what is going on. We capture natural moments that happen in reality without the typical setting up and posing a picture. With this style of photography, we consider ourselves to be “photographic storytellers,” guiding the viewer through the “story” of your wedding day. This is our choice format of wedding photography. We truly enjoy finding those definite moments of significance that often pass by too quickly and capturing them within our lens.
2. Traditional Wedding Photography
Unlike the wedding photojournalistic style, this style of photography has much involvement from the photographer. Many of the portraits are set up and posed, incorporating a more traditional approach to wedding pictures. The wedding photographer acts as a director of sorts, guiding the wedding party and guests into formations and poses for photos. Although the main style of shooting for our studio is the Wedding Photojournalistic style, we do have experience in directing and leading wedding parties into the posed group and individual formal pictures.
3. Fashion Wedding Photography
This style of wedding photography rings true with its name – it is focused on the element of fashion. Brides who request fashion wedding photos to be taken often book studio time outside of a normal wedding day shoot. This allows the photographers to plan out a session incorporating more lighting and creative techniques. Doing a fashion wedding shoot in studio also allows the bride more freedom in moving into typical fashion poses (such as the hands on the hips, hunched back pose) paired with a more serious and “fashion-like” facial expression. Both brides and grooms request this style of wedding photography to add something different and dramatic to their wedding photo album.
4. Trash The Dress Wedding Photography
Synonymous with its name, this style of wedding photography involves the “dirtying” of wedding dress worn after the fact. This style of wedding photography is also called “fearless bridal” or “rock the frock.” Typically, brides choose this after everything is said and done to offer a creative alternative to storing away their wedding dress that they will never wear again. Wedding Gown Silhouettes and Styles
Ball Gown Styling features the popular off-the-shoulder bodice, with a snugly fitted natural waistline, flowing into a lavishly gathered, full skirt. Wedding Gown Lengths
Mini Length features a mini-skirt gown that likely sports a removable overskirt.
Street Length styling features a hem just covering the knees and is a little shorter than the intermission length gown.
Intermission Length features a hem falling between the knees and mid-calf for the average height bride. It may appear as more of a street length for the taller bride. This is sometimes also known as a Midi Length.
Tea Length features a gown that falls between the mid-calf and the ankle. This is the second most popular gown length. It is perfect for an informal or semi-formal beach, garden, or courthouse wedding.
Ballet Length features a gown softly flowing to the ankles.
Floor Length features a gown lightly touching the floor, while allowing just the tips of your shoes to show. This is the most popular gown length when including the formality and train length of your choice.
Handkerchief Hem features a gown made of panels. Each panel ends in a point at the hemline giving a jagged, layered look to the gown, with the longest points ending at mid-calf.
Hi-Lo Length features a gown of intermission length on front and floor length or longer in back.

1. Photojournalism
Photojournalism is the art of capturing moments unobtrusively. Normally you barely know that the photographer is there. He/She normally covers weddings with large telephoto lenses (although not always) and tries not to get in the way of the story as it unfolds. They normally don’t like shooting posed family photographs or posed bride and groom photographs preferring to capture moments as they really happen. This style of photography takes mastering. The photographer needs to know their equipment extremely well and it basically needs to be an extension of their body. If you are going to hire a photojournalist make sure that they person has many years of experience as it is a difficult and artistic method of photography.
2. Illustrative
This photography is usually a creative person who loves design and elements of color and texture. This person will pose in new and different ways, maybe laying the bride on the floor or shooting from strange angles. The photography will set up fun posed shots and instead of just posing and shooting they will have the subjects interact together to capture spontaneous moments. This style of photography brings more of the photographer into the photography. This photographer’s artistic vision and use of lighting, design elements and texture is more artistic. They do not just wait for things to happen and capture them. They will often makes things happen.
3. Traditional
Although traditional photography still has it’s place in the modern photography world it is being pushed aside by more illustrative and photojournilistic styles of shooting. You see more traditional photographers that are older and have been in the industry a long time and have not changed their ways or you will see it in the lower end beginners as it is any easy style of shooting that does not take much creative input. Tradition style photography is posed and can follow a photography list. It is stiffer in it’s style and does not allow for mush spontaneity. This is sadly a dying breed. Although most photojournalists and Illustrative photographers still do some posed photography especially during the posed family shots with the bride and groom. So it still has its place.
The best photographer is a photographer that has the ability to shoot photojournilistic and can capture most of the day as quickly and masterfully as a true photojournalist but that will still give you the fun artsy look of an illustrative photographer. Someone that will prompt some fun stuff and still be able to do posed family shots for mom.
